In that vein, join us as we set sail for the land of smiles with seven wholesome video games that we like to dive into when feeling glum.

7 wholesome video games to cheer you up

Coffee Talk (PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One)

© Toge Productions

The work of a real barista is far from a relaxing one. Then again, most don’t work in a midnight bar which only handles a small number of customers and friends. Coffee Talk is an unusual setup, but one that’ll have you engrossed in its story in no time at all. As the regulars filter in and out of your shop each night, you’ll learn more about their lives, troubles and aspirations. You’re not there to fix them, mind, all you’ll be doing is serving up the drinks.

Pay attention to the orders coming your way or craft something fresh and beautiful as you relax to the mellow beats of its soundtrack. The hurdles your patrons are facing are often serious, but there’s heart, humor and charm here that’ll elicit plenty of smiles throughout the game’s short but sweet running time. Minecraft Dungeons (PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One)

Think of a dungeon. You’re probably imagining a pretty gloomy place — a few rats scurrying here and there, maybe a skeleton or two. Well Minecraft Dungeons certainly features its fair share of skellies, but it also demonstrates that underground chasms and vaults don’t need to be dour. Combining the inspiring titles’ block-based world with an impressive lighting system, Minecraft Dungeons is an unexpectedly pretty place to romp through, and an impressively funny one as well.

By all accounts, a dungeon-crawling spin-off to Minecraft really ought to have been a cheap cash-grab. Yet Mojang has put in the work and produced a superb standalone title that outdoes many of the genre’s top contenders. If you’re after a fresh co-op title that’ll generate more than a few laughs — especially for younger players — then Minecraft Dungeons will keep you busy (and happy) for a good while to come.

A Short Hike (PC)

Sometimes the best way to lift the spirits is to escape into nature. That’s not possible for a lot of us right now, or indeed ever for some of us. A Short Hike won’t replace a real-life walk through the woods, but this fittingly brief little indie jaunt will certainly raise your mood (as well as your elevation) before setting you loose on a joyous and liberating flight.

Assemble With Care (Apple Arcade, PC)

If your idea of mind-balm is watching things slot perfectly into place — we can’t be the only ones who watch hours of extremely satisfying YouTube montages, can we? — then Assemble With Care might be the precise tonic your brain is after.

Sitting in a workshop on the sunny isle of Bellariva, your job is to restore antiques by carefully taking them apart, patching them up, and dutifully piecing them back together. Each of the 13 items which arrives on your table is a fresh puzzle to focus your mind on, while the details of each reveal the nature or history of its owner. It’s a brief experience, but one that never wastes your time, and provides a remarkably tactile satisfaction as you inspect, rotate and repair each antique that’s brought your way.

Slime Rancher (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Released back in 2016, Slime Rancher may be getting on a bit in years, but you’ll struggle to find a cheerier farming game around. Setting up shop on an alien world, your job is to scoop up slimes — unflappably smiley, bouncing blobs of jelly — from the environment, bringing them back to your ranch where you’ll care for and feed them as they produce valuable goods for you.

Slime Rancher is an unrelentingly jolly experience, and the game’s success has seen it receive plenty of updates since launch. If you’ve not tried it before or haven’t played since the months after release, then this is a great time to muck out the sties and get those hands goopy on a colorful alien planet.

Arcade Spirits (PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One)

Arcade Spirits imagines a world in which the video game crash of the 1980s never happened, leaving us with a world brimming with color, neon signs and more than a few games cabinets kicking about. But while arcade games are cool and all, the real heart of this romantic visual novel is in the relationships.

Picking up a job at the Funplex arcade, you’ll meet all sorts of game-hungry customers there for a good time, high scores, and maybe a smooch or two. Oh, and you’ll probably want to save the whole place from an suspiciously sinister takeover. Unlike most relationship sims, Arcade Spirits isn’t just about the loving, you’re free to pursue platonic relationships with all the cast, not just commit yourself to one person per playthrough.
