The Last of Us is getting a TV adaptation on HBO, an adaptation that was announced last March and has gone relatively unmentioned up until now. The show is moving forward with its pilot episode set to be directed by an acclaimed director who you may know from another hit HBO series.
The Last of Us TV show lands a director
Chernobyl director Johan Renck will work on the pilot episode of The Last of Us TV show with the help of Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, Writer and Creator of The Last of Us.
The news comes courtesy of an interview with Renck on the website DiscussingFilm. It was later confirmed today by those involved including Craig Mazin on Twitter who changed his profile picture to a photo of Ellie from The Last of Us, and Neil Druckmann.
In response to the news, Druckmann tweeted, “Quite the team that’s coming together for The Last of Us HBO show. Cannot wait to share more!”
Commenting on working with Craig Mazin again on The Last of Us HBO show, Renck told DiscussingFilm:
“I’m an executive producer on it and attached to it. It’s an ongoing TV series. So that’s not something that I will be able to take on to that extent, but I’m part of that series and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we’ll see how it goes on further. I mean, both Craig and I, we are working with each other again and we will work with each other on other things because we like each other.”
The Last of Us TV show will be a series on HBO featuring multiple episodes, so it’s possible Renck and/or Mazin will work on the series more than the pilot itself. Until additional episodes are confirmed and discussed though, we’re looking forward to seeing how the duo will bring the game to life in the show’s pilot episode at the very least.
The show will be the first series from PlayStation Productions and will follow the events of the first game where Joel and Ellie travel across a post-apocalyptic America facing off against enemies both human and Infected.
As of right now, a date for when it will air has yet to be revealed. We don’t even know if we’ll get a 2021 window, or if it’ll take longer for the series to be completed.
We also don’t know much about whether the show will extend the story beyond The Last of Us given the fact we’re getting a sequel this year on June 19.
Until more info is provided, we’re excited to hear that Emmy Award-winning director Johan Renck and Emmy Award-winning writer Craig Mazin are working on the pilot episode of The Last of Us HBO series.
