Bloober Team have been doing a phenomenal job when it comes to releasing psychological horror games and they have no intention of stopping. Recently, Bloober Team announced a brand new psychological horror game called The Medium. In the game, you won’t have conventional weapons at your disposal to help keep you safe.
There are no traditional weapons in The Medium
Psychological horror games are often more effective in scaring the sanity out of you than games with abrupt jump scares. Bloober Team are very familiar with the efficacy of psychological horror having relied on it to spook players in games like Blair Witch and Layers of Fear.
The next game from Bloober Team, The Medium, sounds like it’ll offer an equally creepy experience that lingers in your mind long after you finish playing the game. In The Medium, you play as a psychic named Marianne who’s able to cross the boundaries between the world of the living and the world of the dead.
Getting that close to the world of the dead can be dangerous, and should something try and attack Marianne, she won’t have any weapons to defend herself according to an interview Bloober did with Edge magazine (August 2020, Issue #347).
Marianne isn’t defenseless though, as players will have the option to use Marianne’s hands to create a “spiritual shield to defend herself against evil entities” as well as a “psychic energy blast” which sounds pretty badass to be honest. Marianne may not have traditional weapons like a gun or a knife, but it sounds like she’s a weapon in and of herself.
The way Marianne’s psychic powers will look in The Medium will also be more impressive than shooting at enemies. As Prima Games notes, next-gen consoles will help give The Medium a visual edge.
“The Medium may not have been graphically possible on current-gen consoles. Releasing on PC and Xbox Series X later this year, Marianne’s energy blast ability shown off in the game’s trailer seems like it’d be right at home on next-gen platforms.”
We agree with Prima’s take here as The Medium sounds like it’ll be a must-play experience on the Xbox Series X. The game will also be available for purchase on PC which is equally awesome and we look forward to seeing how the game plays on each platform once it’s released.
Until then, details like Marianne’s “psychic energy blast” make us even more excited to play The Medium. It sounds like a game with an interesting story, interesting mechanics, and some truly impressive visuals.
