To pet a fox in Ghost of Tsushima, you must find a Fox Den shrine and honor it. There are shrines all over the island of Tsushima, but it’s the smaller ones that’ll give you a foxy guest. As you explore, keep an eye out for a message telling you that you’ve entered a Fox Den area. These spots are marked by a fox head on your map, and indicate that a small orange friend will be nearby.

Find the fox in a Fox Den and it’ll start running away, leading you to the shrine. You might need to hop between some ledges to follow, but when you make it to the shrine, you can hit R2 to honor the shrine. Once this is done, all you need to do is turn around and look behind you. After you honor a shrine, the fox that led you there will walk back a bit and sit down. You can then walk up to it and press R2 to interact and pet the fox in Ghost of Tsushima. It’s a lovely little moment, and we’ll choose to do it every time we can, even without a gameplay benefit.

It’s worth noting that at a few shrines in Ghost of Tsushima, you’ll be in an awkward position (such as on a cliff face) when you honor it, meaning the fox won’t stick around for a pet. Don’t stress too much if you can’t find your cute companion. Head to another Fox Den and try again!
