PS4 controller will work with PS5, but not for PS5 games

The DualShock 4 will be able to play PS4 games on PS5, but new games need DualSense controller.

The PlayStation 4's DualShock controller will be able to connect to the PS5, but won't be able to play any of the new games on the next-gen console.

Sony has released an FAQ about which existing PS4 peripherals and controllers will work with PS5, so gamers can decide which to hold onto when clearing space for the beast of a console in their TV cabinets.

PS4 controllers that will work with the new PS5 console include specialty peripherals, such as licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks, which will be able to play PS5 games as well as the PS4 titles that make it across the generational divide.

Wireless headsets, such as the Platinum and Gold Sony-made models and third-party headsets that connect with USB or 3.5mm, will also work on PS5 (without a headset companion app).

And while the PS4's DualShock 4 wireless controller will connect to the PS5, it will only work with supported PS4 games. As reasoning for this halfway house, VR and Peripherals Marketing lead Isabelle Tomatis explained: "We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

The PS5's DualSense controller makes use of advanced haptic feedback on triggers, to provide varying degrees of pressure as you pull them. It's likely that this factors in as a control schema that isn't replicated on the PS4, for instance there could be an input that only after fully depressing a full-tension trigger can you use a secondary ability.

For VR fans, all the current gear will work with PS5 compatible titles, including the PlayStation Camera, Move Motion Controllers and VR Aim Controller.

Were you hoping to be able to use PS4 controllers with PS5 games? What does this mean for all the upcoming couch multiplayer games on PS5? Are we going to have to amass a new arsenal of PS5 DualSense controllers just to play with friends again?
