Genius Japanese players create rugby in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

All they had to do was try.

If your interest in Animal Crossing: New Horizons has begun to wane, perhaps the problem is just a lack of creativity. Each time we think players have exhausted the experiences on offer in Nintendo’s island life sim, they find new ways to impress us.

Today we present you with Animal Crossing: New Horizons rugby. Splitting six players between two sides of a pitch demarcated by custom floor art lines, AC rugby has a simple aim: get the ball over your opponent's try line. Animal Crossing’s item catalogue certainly includes an american football/rugby ball, but moving it about isn’t possible with friends on your island. How did these clever players navigate the problem? By turning the referee into the ball.

Wearing a custom painted hat to look like a rugby ball, the referee must be pushed over the opposing team’s line. It’s a surprisingly tricky thing to manage, leading to a mighty scuffle that one could very well call a rolling maul. It’s genius, and looks like really good fun. We love the inclusion of russian dolls as the audience, the trench at the side, and the whistle/”try” message when crossing the line.

Last year Japan played host to the Rugby World Cup. The home nation performed exceptionally well, leading to an increase in interest in the sport. As a rugby fan, it’s great to see that carry over into the virtual world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well. Finally, my two
