Samsung's First Look event gives us a glimpse of QLED TV tech of the future

The live stream from New York showed off the new seamless smart displays.

Samsung's First Look event in New York today showed off the company's latest range of QLED TVs which can blend seamlessly into the wall they're mounted onto.

The 2018 Samsung QLED TV line-up includes voice assistant-enabled screens that can connect to any other SmartThings devices in your home, allowing your Samsung appliances to talk to each other and interact with the display.

With internet connectivity, the TVs can also show off neat screensavers in Ambient Mode, like the above mountain range which changes color depending on the weather and time, all overlayed on a recreation of the wall behind it so your TV truly becomes a part of the room. It can also show news headlines or photo collages.

Connecting to your smartphone seemed hassle-free in the on-stage demonstration, eliminating much of the setup required for their current line of TVs, you don't even have to remember your Wi-Fi password.

This also allows you to connect other devices such as doorbells, thermostats and lights so you can use your TV as a home hub, with the built-in Bixby voice assistant to help you control them and on-screen notifications in the upper right corner.

The 2018 range of Samsung QLED TVs will be offered in the following model lines and screen sizes:

  • Q9 Series: 75-inch, 65-inch
  • Q8 Series: 75-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch
  • Q7 Series: 75-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch
  • Q6 Series: 82-inch, 75-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch, 49-inch

The Q9 is the most fully-featured of the bunch, boasting full-array local dimming on the Q9 and 8, with the former having more zones. Each model supports HDR10+, exceeding the current industry standard.
