Led by Herman Hulst, the January PlayStation State of Play showcased a range of games over 40 minutes, including deeper looks at known titles like Rise of the Ronin, and announcements of brand new IPs and sequels. Here’s everything put on show in the order they arrived:

HellDivers 2 trailer prepares for landing

The show opened with a quick trailer for Helldivers 2, which launches on February 8. Chaotic and challenging bug-hunting shifts from top down to a third-person perspective in this shooter with all too many options for friendly fire.

Stellar Blade confirms its release date

Second on the docket was a further look at Stellar Blade, the new IP from South Korean studio Shift Up. We got an introduction to the story and look at some hack-and-slash action gameplay taking place in a post-apocalyptic Earth, ravaged by a monstrous alien race called Naytibas. Stellar Blade is due to release April 26.

Sonic X Shadow Generations reveal trailer

Picking up the pace was the reveal of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game. It pairs a remastered version of Sonic Generations featuring classic 2D and 3D stages with an all-new campaign. Shadow the Hedgehog takes the starring role in the new content, where it looks like he’ll be heading into space to face an alien threat.

Zenless Zone Zero gets a PS5 version

Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail developer miHoYo offered an updated look at Zenless Zone Zero, the action-roguelike first announced back in 2022. It’s another flashy montage showing off various character’s special moves, but sadly it doesn’t reveal much new beyond a PS5 version being in development.

Foamstars will star in February’s PS Plus monthly games

Splatoon-like wacky suds-based shooter Foamstars brought the party atmosphere next. It’s out on February 6 and will be included in the next batch of PS Plus monthly games. That's an ideal chance to download it and give it a go at no extra cost if you’re a subscriber.

Dave the Diver splashes onto Playstation with Godzilla DLC

The fish-catching, sushi-serving pixel-art hit from last year will paddle its way over to PlayStation in April, with a Godzilla DLC tie in following afterwards in May. He certainly looks grumpy, but perhaps the King of Monsters just wants to try the best sushi bar in the business?

V Rising wings its way to PlayStation

Vampire survival game V Rising is getting a console release this year. Expand your undead above from a humble home to a grand castle worthy of a vampire lord. Feast on humans, fight terrifying beasts, and prove yourself the most terrible of them all when it launches in 2024.

Silent Hill: The Short Message is available now

Konami is going all in on Silent Hill it seems, and 2024’s State of Play included the surprise reveal and release of a free game called Silent Hill: The Short Message. It follows a girl called Anita exploring a decrepit apartment block surrounded by rumors of suicide. It’s available to download now on PS5 if you feel you’re due a nightmare or two.

Silent Hill 2 remake gameplay footage

A Silent Hill double feature? You do spoil us, State of Play. We then got a look at combat gameplay from the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake from Bloober team. The action still look a little rough, but we don’t yet have a release date so there may be plenty of time for polish. The remake is one of several Silent Hill releases Konami announced in 2022.

Judas gets a new trailer

Judas, the new narrative FPS from Ghost Town Games and Bioshock creator Ken Levine also got a new trailer during the January State of Play. It certainly looks ver Bioshock, with some kind of sci-fi society falling apart and body-modification powers. And hey, we’re not complaining. No Judas release date just yet though.

Metro Awakening PS VR2 reveal trailer

The popular Metro series takes its first foray into VR. The debut trailer for the PS VR2 title shows off some very slick visuals, and the dank dark tunnels make for an ideal setting for some a horror VR experience. Let’s hope it can live up to the high bar set by the main games.

Legendary Tales trailer teases physical VR fun

The PS VR2 segment continued with a look at Legendary Tales, a medieval fantasy action-RPG with plenty of physics-driven combat, magic, and support for up to four players in co-op.

Dragons Dogma 2 combat trailer

If you weren’t already excited by the prospect of Dragons Dogma 2, the combat shown off in this latest trailer should help. The flashy elemental spells and dynamic, monster-scaling combat look lovely. It’s out March 22.

Rise of the Ronin trailer introduces its setting and combat options.

Next up, Team Ninja director Fumihiko Yasuda introduced Rise of Ronin, the studio’s upcoming open-world action-RPG. Set in the Bakumatsu era which saw the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The trailer shows off the unique cityscape of Yokohama, one of the first cities opened to foreigners at the time. There’s a great sense of freedom to the movement thanks to equipment like a glider and grappling hook. It releases March 22.

Until Dawn gets a remaster

The Dark Pictures studio Supermassive Games returns to the title that kicked off the genre. Mountaintop cinematic horror tale Until Dawn is being “rebuilt and enhanced” for PS5. But will those infamous hold-the-controller-still moments have been made any less brutal? Until Dawn is set to haunt us once again on PS5 and PC this year.

Death Stranding 2 reveal trailer

The biggest reveal of the night was Death Stranding 2, introduced with a fittingly nonsensical trailer. Want to see trailer in which a baby with inky tears burps out a spaceship? Maybe one where a Joker wannabe fights a robot samurai with an electric guitar? Perhaps you'd prefer a small puppet animated out of sync with the main, photorealistic cast? Only for a Kojima game can you get the full package, folks. The story sees protagonist Sam return for a new mission beyond the UCA’s network. It won’t be coming until 2025 though.

Physint

Hideo Kojima is content with just a sequel though, oh no. The enigmatic developer also concluded the show by announcing a return to action-espionage with a brand new IP. According to Kojima himself, production on the title will begin after Death Stranding 2. It will, apparently, aim to “transcend the barriers between film and video games.”

Those are all the January PlayStation State of Play trailers and announcements. What are you most excited about? You can watch the whole show back here. State of Play will be back on February 6 with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Of course, you can make sure you’re well equipped to enjoy all the games shown by picking up high-end gaming gear from the HyperX store.
