Which 4K TV should I buy during Black Friday 2017?

The jargon and confusion around 4K TVs outstrips even that of HDTVs during their introduction to the market. When Black Friday 2017 rolls round, we’ll be able to give you more precise details on which models are worth your cash, but until then there are some rules to follow.

To be listed as 4K, a TV only needs to display resolutions of 3840x2160 pixels – about four times the resolution of 1080p HD. Obviously pixel density means screen size becomes a bigger factor, so if you’re not looking for anything around the 50-55” mark then perhaps 4K isn’t for you.

Aside from pixel counts, 4K tech sometimes also includes High Dynamic Range (HDR) as a feature. This uses more variable contrast and brightness ratios to make darker blacks and brighter whites, as well as restoring better color balance to scenes lit with dramatic light sources. Not all 4K TVs feature HDR, and there is an additional 4K Premium designation for those that do it to sufficient regulations, so look out for that little black and gold sticker in your hunt.

When buying for an Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, you’ll certainly be wanting one that makes the most of both consoles’ improved HDR settings, but also one with low input lag, which can be difficult to find in the model’s technical specifications. Screen size is basically as big as you can fit in your home without it looking like a movie theater, unless that’s the look you’re going for.
