The Surge - How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor

Learn how to upgrade your gear in The Surge.

This guide will show you how to upgrade your weapons and armor in The Surge. As you progress through The Surge, you’ll encounter enemies that hit harder and have more health, in order to protect yourself from them and deal more damage to them, you will need to upgrade and improve your gear.

There are a few things you need before you are able to upgrade your weapons and armor, specifically plenty of Tech Scrap, materials and components. The materials needed to upgrade are the same ones you can find while farming for materials. Cutting off a limb will reward you with either a Schematic or armor material, as well as Tungsten Alloy – the material needed to craft and upgrade weapons in The Surge. Once you upgrade weapons, you will also want to equip more weapons so you have an answer for every situation.

If you want to upgrade an item to Mark III, you will need the Mark III version of that material. You can learn all about farming for materials in The Surge in our guide.

Use the right-thumbstick or the Q and E keys to increase or decrease the Mark of the upgrade. Sometimes you can skip a Mark entirely, such as if you want to upgrade something from Mark I to Mark III, provided you have the necessary Mark III materials, you can skip Mark II.
