Sony on Fortnite cross-play: 'PlayStation 4 is the best place to play'

A new statement from Sony doubles down on the company's stance against cross-play.

Where companies like Microsoft and Nintendo have grown to embrace cross-platform support, Sony continues to strongly oppose the idea. The issue as to whether or not Sony should shift their stance on cross-play came to a head this year after players were unable to transfer progress from their PlayStation 4 Fortnite account over to Nintendo Switch.

Not only were transfers themselves blocked, players also found themselves locked out of the game after attempting to log into their Fortnite account on Nintendo Switch. Since then, Microsoft and Nintendo have partnered on cross-play for Minecraft, while Sony has effectively stamped out cross-play opportunities in upcoming multiplayer games like Fallout 76.

Speaking on the issue, Bethesda’s Todd Howard explained: “You cannot do cross-play in 76. We’d really love that, but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.” Despite this, gamers remain tentatively optimistic that Sony will eventually change their mind, especially seeing as how “money” is reportedly the main motivator blocking cross-play support.

Making hopes harder to cling to, though, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida released a new statement against cross-play in an interview with The Independent. According to Yoshida:

“On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users. That’s our belief.”

Yoshida went on to note that competition between Microsoft and Nintendo serves as “a healthy situation” for the gaming industry and its ability to grow. In essence, Sony doesn’t appear to care that other companies are benefiting from cross-platform support, as Sony seemingly has other plans for internal growth.

We continue to recommend that fans reach out to Sony requesting cross-play support, especially if they wish to see the company update their policy. In fact, fans withholding money from Sony over the issue is one of the main factors leading us to believe that Sony will update their cross-platform policy… eventually.

In the meantime, what do you think of Yoshida’s comments on PlayStation 4 being the “best place to play” Fortnite. Do you agree, or would you prefer cross-platform support from Sony? Let us know down in the comments below!
