Most anticipated games of 2019

It’s the beginning of 2019, and what better time to pump ourselves up for the year’s new releases than by taking a closer look at some of the most anticipated games of 2019. Not only will we be looking at releases coming out within the next few months, we’re also including games projected to drop this year, but lack a confirmed release date.

For example, games like Death Stranding, Cyberpunk 2077, and Metroid Prime 4 all have the potential to release this year, though they could also be pushed into 2020. Wondering what games to keep an eye out for in January? Check out our previous feature listing all of the games scheduled to release during the first month of 2019!

With that out of the way, let’s dive right into our picks for the most anticipated game releases of 2019!

Most Anticipated Games of 2019

Kingdom Hearts 3

Kicking off the list of our most anticipated games of 2019 is Kingdom Hearts 3 which is scheduled to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 25, 2019 in Japan, then globally on January 29. Fans of the Kingdom Hearts franchise have been anxiously awaiting the third game for over a decade.

With so much time devoted to Kingdom Hearts 3 – which was first announced back in 2013 – we’re expecting a knock-out third installment. Even in the unlikely event that Kingdom Hearts 3 fails to live up to expectations, it should have no problem serving up a healthy dose of nostalgia and fun.

Furthermore, if you’ve never played a Kingdom Hearts game before (or were too young to check out the first few games) there’s never been a better time to acclimate yourself with the series. While the story may be a little hard to comprehend, Kingdom Hearts has always been a unique industry gem that’s well worth experiencing.

Metro Exodus

This may be a bit of personal bias on our part, but we love the Metro games and have been eagerly awaiting the release of Metro Exodus ever since it was announced back in 2017. While originally slated to release in 2018, the game was eventually pushed back into 2019. Now, Metro Exodus is scheduled to release on February 15, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Metro Exodus takes place after the events of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. What's more, Metro Exodus includes the return of protagonist Artyom and promises to deliver a nice blend of first-person shooting, stealth, and survival elements.

Unlike other Metro games, Metro Exodus allows the player to traverse the post-apocalyptic Russian wasteland which is complemented by a day/night cycle, diverse scenery, as well as a dynamic weather system. Plus, the game had an amazing trailer backed by a prime song choice in the form of Angel by Massive Attack. To get hyped for the release of Metro Exodus, we’ve embedded that memorable trailer up above.

Anthem

Anthem is going to be one of those big games to watch in 2019, not only in terms of potential, but size and scale as well. As BioWare’s latest action multiplayer action RPG, interested gamers can look forward to the title’s release on February 22, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

If you’re looking for story content, Anthem promises to offer an intriguing sci-fi premise alongside a fun cast of characters and the ability to interact and romance NPCs. Interested in combat? Anthem has that in spades thanks to its incorporation of shooter elements and a “shared” world. Fan of mechs, tech, and exosuits?

Anthem boasts a unique “Javelin” suit that comes in four different types, each tailored to a different play style. What’s more, the world of Anthem oozes a futuristic theme that we personally can’t wait to dive into this coming February!

Devil May Cry 5

Dante and Nero are back in the latest entry in the Devil May Cry series, Devil May Cry 5. Offering a return to form, Devil May Cry includes all the familiar hack-and-slash staples you’d expect alongside new forms of combat such as Nero’s upgradeable “Devil Breakers.” After its announcement in 2018, gamers have been eagerly awaiting the release of Devil May Cry 5.

Fortunately, they won’t have to wait too much longer as Devil May Cry 5 is set to launch on March 8, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. One of the main reasons why we’re excited for Devil May Cry 5 centers around the game’s story, which takes place after the events of Devil May Cry 2.

DMC 5 promises to offer more backstory on the relationship between Dante and Nero, along with a true return to form thanks to the fact that it’s being directed by Hideaki Itsuno.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

FromSoftware has something new up their sleeve with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. While FromSoftware has become known over the years for their Dark Souls series, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will reportedly offer a different approach despite feeling blissfully familiar to Souls fans. For example, you won’t find familiar RPG elements in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

The game presents as an action-adventure title that utilizes third-person POV. Relying on a katana, the game tasks players with attacking enemies until a killing blow can be dealt. Other weapons and tools can be called upon such as a sinister looking grappling hook, and elements of stealth where you can sneak past enemies and avoid combat altogether.

Eager to sink your teeth into the next FromSoftware title? You’re in luck, as the game comes out in a few short months on March 22, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Days Gone

Days Gone is a game that has been plagued by delays, delays, and more delays. Originally announced all the way back at E3 2016 and scheduled to release in 2018, Days Gone now has a confirmed release date of April 26, 2019 for PlayStation 4.

Even though the delays have been disappointing, Days Gone still promises to be a noteworthy entry in the zombie genre. Days Gone boasts a large, open world full of zombies called Freakers with a diverse selection of subtypes, including infected animals.

With a high attention to detail, and delays done to further polish and perfect the game, we expect Days Gone to be among the best releases of 2019. Even if it fails to live up to the hype, it’ll still be nice to experience the game firsthand, as it’s been far too long since a new zombie IP captured our attention like Days Gone.

New Pokemon Game (Core)

If Pokemon: Let’s Go wasn’t your jam, you’ll be happy to hear that a new core Pokemon title has been confirmed for 2019. Estimated to drop towards the end of 2019 (perhaps in November like Pokemon: Let’s Go), the next core Pokemon game will bring about the fated release of Gen 8 creatures.

In the trustworthy hands of Game Freak, the next Pokemon game is being developed for a release on Nintendo Switch and may attempt to incorporate mechanics seen in Pokemon: Let’s Go like motion control. As of right now, it’s unclear what sort of direction Game Freak and Nintendo plan to take with their latest Pokemon game.

Could it be a repeat of Pokemon: Let’s Go? Maybe. Could it be more traditional, like Pokemon Sun and Moon? Also possible. One thing’s for certain though, we can’t wait to learn more about the next Pokemon title when it’s announced later this year!

New Animal Crossing Game

While we’re on the subject of new Nintendo Switch games, a new Animal Crossing game was revealed during a Nintendo Direct back in September of 2018. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting news concerning the latest entry in the Animal Crossing series. Projected to release in 2019, little is known about the new Animal Crossing game other than the fact that it’s being developed for Nintendo Switch.

Can we expect the incorporation of motion controls in the next Animal Crossing, similar to Pokemon: Let’s Go? Will we see new characters alongside the return of fan favorites like Isabelle and Tom Nook? It’s definitely possible. Until more information is revealed, all we have is speculation.

Despite this, it’s fun to think of what we have to look forward to in the next Animal Crossing game, and we can’t wait to play it sometime later this year!

Death Stranding

This one is a bit trickier in that Death Stranding has no confirmed release date, and while we have several trailers, we still know next to nothing about what Death Stranding “is.” In the past, Kojima is quoted as saying: “It [Death Stranding] will be out before the Olympics.” To specify, Kojima means the Tokyo Games in 2020.

He then added, “To go a little further, there is a movie called Akira, and it will be out before the year in which Akira is set.” Akira takes place in 2019, meaning that if we go by Kojima’s hint, Death Stranding will either release in 2019 or 2020. We’re going to make a prediction, and we hope we’re right about this.

Considering the 2020 Olympics begin on July 24 and end on August 9, we predict that Death Stranding will either release in July or August of 2019. What’s more, we think a Death Stranding trailer will drop at PSX 2019 announcing the game’s upcoming release date. If we’re right, we can’t wait to finally figure out what Death Stranding is all about as the game is high on our list of the most anticipated 2019 releases.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is another game that has no confirmed release date, though we’re predicting that the game could release by the end of 2019. Unlike Death Stranding where we have a quote pinpointing a 2019 release, we don’t have much to go on other than a gut feeling. Of course, it’s just as likely that Cyberpunk 2077 could be pushed into early 2020 in order to properly polish the game.

On the Cyberpunk Twitter, an update regarding the release of Cyberpunk 2077 was announced that reads, “Coming when it’s ready.”

Essentially, if Cyberpunk 2077 is ready in 2019, it’ll release in 2019. If not, fans may have to wait a bit longer to dive into the latest from CD Projekt Red. Thinking positively, we’re including Cyberpunk 2077 on our list of the most anticipated game releases of 2019, and we certainly hope we’re right.

The Last of Us: Part 2

Joining Cyberpunk 2077 in our “we hope it comes out in 2019” is The Last of Us: Part 2. Originally announced at the PlayStation Experience in 2016, the release of The Last of Us: Part 2 is simply a matter of time.

From what we saw of the game at E3 2018, the game looks as though it’s close to completion, meaning that a 2019 release date isn’t outside the realm of possibility. Set five years after the events of The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Part 2 returns players to a hostile, post-apocalyptic world.

Not only do we want to know what happened to Joel, we’re also curious to see how an older, wiser Ellie deals with new threats such as the emergence of a new cult. At E3 2019, we predict we’ll get a new trailer and confirmed 2019 release date for The Last of Us: Part 2 with the game coming out sometime later this Fall. Fingers crossed!

Metroid Prime 4

Metroid Prime 4 was mysteriously absent from E3 2018 and every Nintendo Direct that aired in 2018, leaving fans to wonder what the reason behind the radio silence is. Has the project been cancelled? Is Metroid Prime 4 a real thing? To help calm your anxiety, Metroid Prime 4 is a real game, one we should hear more about in 2019.

If we had to guess, a 2019 release date for Metroid Prime 4 is unlikely, though we’re not ruling out the possibility of a holiday release. We expect a new trailer for Metroid Prime 4 to drop during a Nintendo Direct, or during Nintendo’s E3 2019 presentation. In this trailer, we should see some gameplay, learn a little more about the story, and perhaps even get a release window. No matter what happens, we can’t wait to learn more about Metroid Prime 4 in 2019!
