Minecraft ray tracing will become a thing of the now when RTX support is added to the classic block miner enabling lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows.
Just days after cancelling the Super Duper Graphics pack announced at E3 2017 for being "too technically demanding", Minecraft has been confirmed to receive support for Nvidia's RTX technology in a reveal trailer for the pretty lighting update.
"With raytracing, lighting is upgraded to real-time global illumination, emissive blocks like Glowstone and Lava can illuminate environments, water, glass and other reflective surfaces show accurate real-time reflections and shading and shadowing gains lifelike accuracy," the description reads.
"Clouds, fog and other atmospheric effects naturally change the look and feel of the world. Blocks gain extra depth and detail from normal maps, enabling shadows, lighting, specular reflectivity and ambient occlusion to further increase their fidelity and appearance."
The entire game will have ray tracing improvements, but the main draw is those delicious God rays as sunlight filters through foliage and over crests of mountains.
It's unclear if the next generation of consoles, including Microsoft's Project Scarlett, will support Nvidia's advanced rendering techniques, but we sure would like to dig around for diamonds in a world as pretty as this.
