10 new games we can't wait to play in 2020

Welcome to a fresh year of delights. 2019 is all squared away, and while it certainly was a good one for video game lovers like you and me, we’re even more excited for what’s to come. 2020 has tons of mouthwatering games to look forward to — so many in fact that we’re not sure we’ll have the time to play them all! To narrow our selection somewhat, we’ve rounded up the top ten new games we can’t wait to play in 2020. Ready to join us on the hype train?

1. The Last of Us: Part 2 - May 29

Having only played The Last of Us Remastered last year, we can only imagine how tough the wait has been for those who experienced Joel and Ellie’s tale when it originally released back in 2013. Come 2020 and all of us will finally get the chance to set forth on the next stage in their journey, and oh boy does it look good. Tense, brutal combat, smooth contextual actions, and the hefty weight of unresolved storylines. The Last of Us: Part 2 is shaping up to be something quite special, and at this stage we’re simply counting down the days until May 29.

2. Half-Life: Alyx - March 2020

If you’re lucky enough to own a compatible VR headset, 2020 is looking like a groundbreaking year already. We haven’t had a new Half-Life game for over 10 years and, we’re going to be honest, we didn’t expect to ever see one again. As a full, feature-length game with impressive voice acting, physics and interaction, Half-Life: Alyx could be the big VR title, especially when played with the Index’s unique grip controllers. It’s not a continuation of the story we left all those years ago, but we’re still oh-so eager to return to City 17. Now Valve, you will give us a gravity gun in VR, won’t you?

3. Dreams - February 14

Media Molecule’s Dreams continues to impress us through the sheer breadth of experiences it offers. Or perhaps we should say Media Molecule’s fanbase continues to impress us, as after all this is a game that lets its community create the content. Dreams’s various betas have produced art museums, shooters, recreations of iconic towns, RPGs, platformers and, well, we could go on for some time. Forget living our own dreams, we want to enjoy everyone else’s.

4. Roller Champions - Early 2020

The surprise star of E3 2019 for us, Ubisoft’s Roller Champions sees you screeching around a Roller Derby ring in teams of three, with each loop completed adding points to your next score. It’s one of those bizarre, niche sports games that, like Rocket League, somehow just works in video game form. Teaming up with a mate to plan passes and intercepts during 2019’s beta was a blast, and left us itching to get back on the track this year.

5.Doom Eternal - March 20

The revival of Doom in 2016 was an absolute riot, offering one of the best combat loops of the decade as we blasted and ripped our way through the hordes of hell. We’ve now had a nice long holiday from the fiery depths, and could quite go for a return trip if we're being honest. Thankfully Doom Eternal looks ready to provide just that, even generously adding a new grappling hook and sword to let us get up close and personal with our cacodemon friends. We can easily imagine returning to Doom Eternal throughout the year as a cathartic reprieve from the heavy narratives of other releases.

6. Resident Evil 3 - April 3

When Leon and Clare’s return in Resi 2 blew us away in early 2019, we knew a remake of Resident Evil 3 was on the cards. However, we never suspected it’d be only a year’s wait until Jill and Carlos would step out into Raccoon City once more. With how well received the Resi 2 remake was, the new game has large, Mr X size boots to fill. Judging by the early footage we’ve seen though, the freshly revamped Jill Valentine and Nemesis will be battling each other fiercely as they step up and stake their claim. Did we mention that Resident Evil 3 also comes with the Resident Evil Resistance multiplayer mode for free?

7. Cyberpunk 2077 - April 16

The Witcher 3 was one of the best RPGs, and probably best games of the last decade. CD Projekt Red’s next title, Cyberpunk 2077, could be the game to dethrone it. Taking out of medieval fantasy and into the seedy lights of Night City, Cyberpunk 2077 is comfortably one of the most anticipated titles of 2020, and it’s not just because it features Keanu Reeves with a bionic arm.

8. Ghost of Tsushima - Summer 2020

For a game announced back in 2017, we’ve seen surprisingly little of Ghost of Tsushima, but what we have been shown has left us hungry for more. Set during the Mongol invasion of 1274, the game follows the last samurai on the island of Tsushima, a southern island that lies between Japan and Korea. The short sequence revealed at E3 last year was a gorgeous mix of open-world exploration, stealth and swordplay. If its cinematic samurai battles can even half measure up to Sekiro’s boss fights, we’ll have quite the experience on our hands this summer.

9. Halo Infinite - Holiday 2020

There are plenty of rumors swirling as to what shape the next entry in the Halo series will take, and all signs point towards it thoroughly revamping the traditional formula. If that hasn’t whetted your appetite, then perhaps the real return of the Chief will do. Few games mix vehicles in with their run and gunning as well as Halo, so we’re already salivating over what 343 Industries has planned for the massive landscapes glimpsed in their early teasers.

10. SkateBIRD - 2020

It’s a game about tiny birds skating on desktops. Seriously, what more could you want?

Those were ten games we’re seriously looking forward to in 2020. Wait a minute, we just realized we missout on Animal Crossing: New Horizons! There's just too much good stuff coming out that we can't keep up. But what are your picks? Let us know the games you’re already shaking your wallet or purse at in the comments below!
