In the first few days of your Animal Crossing: New Horizons adventure, the best way to get iron nuggets is from rocks. You should have a few dotted around your island, and you’ll need a shovel to get the best goods out of them. Try to just whack one and you’ll only get a few pieces, but you can be sure to get the most out of every rock by learning a simple trick to mining effectively.

After you hit a rock the first time, there’s a time limit during which you’ll be able to keep hitting it and getting items out. To make sure you can get eight items out of each and every rock, what you need to do is create a corner or a line of holes in the ground behind you by digging with a one space gap from the rock. This will form a barrier so that when you hit the rock, you won’t get pushed back (more information here). You then just need to keep hitting the rock quickly until eight items have come out. Depending on the rock, you may receive stone, clay, iron nuggets, or even a load of money.

Once you’ve mastered this trick to mining rocks, you should travel round your island each day and harvest as much as you can from each rock. They’ll reset with a new day, meaning you can start again. With this method, it shouldn’t take you long to save up the 30 iron nuggets needed for Timmy & Tommy’s shop. Don’t forget to talk to your other residents too, as sometimes they’ll give you a gift of an iron nugget.

If your island’s rocks aren’t enough, you can also depart on Mystery Island Tours. These unique islands will also contain their own rocks, so take along a sturdy shovel and get to work collecting the items they drop as well.
