A number of Mario games are being remastered for the Nintendo Switch according to sources for both Eurogamer and VGC, revealed in reports today.
Among the games to be released on the latest Nintendo console this year are Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshin, and a Deluxe version of Super Mario World with new levels. On top of these remasters, there will also be a brand new Paper Mario game. VGC reports that 'most' of the Mario back catalog will be remastered on Switch and released during 2020, so expect even more classic Mario titles to be confirmed soon.
The Mario 35th Anniversary celebration was intended to be a physical event during this year's E3, however due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic the plans have changed. VGC suggests that Nintendo could instead opt for a digital showcase, as its Nintendo Direct series has been doing for years now.
Last week's surprise Nintendo Direct Mini gave details of a number of non-first-party games releasing on Nintendo Switch this year but left a sizeable and noticeable gap in information about what Nintendo themselves are working on for the console. A massive rework of almost every Mario game that has ever come out would certainly account for a gap that size.
Other celebrations for Mario's 35th year are already being revealed, with Lego Mario sets finally becoming a reality and the upcoming debut of Super Nintendo World. The theme park, due to open at Universal Studios in Japan this year with Orlando, Hollywood and Singapore to follow, could very well be delayed by the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
However, with this many classic Mario games coming to Switch, there's a chance a good number of us won't see the outside at all during summer. Which old Mario game are you most excited to see remastered on Switch?
