Details on a Nook’s Cranny upgrade in Animal Crossing: New Horizons were revealed by dataminer Ninji on Twitter. In the tweet, Ninji expands upon the requirements to upgrade Nook’s Cranny which include the following steps:

  • Mabel must have visited your island.
  • At least 200,000 Bells need to have been spent at Nook’s Cranny both buying items and selling items.
  • At least 30 days must have passed following the construction of Nook’s Cranny.

To test these requirements out, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have been adjusting the time on their Nintendo Switch to 30 or more days in the future. As long as they’ve met the other two requirements, it’s been confirmed that Nook’s Cranny does indeed upgrade into a larger shop.

For Animal Crossing: New Horizons players who don’t want to “time travel” by adjusting their Nintendo Switch date and time, it sounds like you won’t have to wait too much longer for the store to upgrade on its own depending on when you constructed Nook’s Cranny. For example, if your Nook’s Cranny shop opened on March 21, you should see the upgrade happen by April 21 or April 22 at the latest.

What’s interesting about the Nook’s Cranny upgrade is the passage of time requirement as it makes us wonder what other structures and features can be upgraded in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. For example, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that you may be able to upgrade the Able Sisters shop in a similar manner to Nook’s Cranny, turning it into a larger shop.

That said, the only upgrade like this that’s been confirmed is the Nook’s Cranny upgrade thanks to info from dataminer Ninji and visuals from Animal Crossing: New Horizons players who’ve tested out the time travel method on Switch.
