How to use aspects in Diablo 4

Learn how to get aspects and imprint them in weapons in Diablo 4.

In Diablo 4, aspects can be used to modify your equipment with powerful buffs that can help you build your class into an unstoppable warrior. The system isn’t explained that clearly for newcomers, so in this guide we’ll explain how to use aspects in Diablo 4 so that you can start powering up your weapons and armor.

To use aspects in Diablo 4, you need to visit an Occultist. These can be found in most major settlements, with the first you’ll reach being Demyan in Kyovashad. Once you’ve finished the early story missions, you’ll gain the Extraction and Imprinting priority quest which tasks you with visiting the Occultist.

You’ll find them in the west side of Kyovashad, easily located via the Occultist icon on the map (see the image below). Speak with Demyan and you’ll be presented with the aspect imprinting and aspect extracting menus.

In Diablo 4, aspects are earned in two ways:

  • Completing dungeons for the first time.
  • Extracting from Legendary Items which already have aspects.

In the former case, you’ll unlock aspects for the Codex of Power. These are permanently available aspects which can be imprinted into as many items as you like. Bear in mind, however, that most aspects are class restricted. You can still equip items with aspects for other classes, but you won’t gain the benefit. You should focus on completing dungeons that reward you with aspects for your class if you want to use them right away. Hover over a dungeon to see what aspect it rewards for first time completion.

In the latter case, aspects extracted from items can only be tied to a single piece of equipment. Extracting an aspect from a Legendary item at the Occultist will destroy the item permanently. They can only be imprinted into one item at a time, so make sure you choose carefully before using them.

Before you use aspects in Diablo 4, it’s also worth knowing that they come in types which apply to certain equipment slots. You can’t just apply any aspect into any item. If you select an aspect first at the Occultist, you’ll then only be able to select any applicable items and vice versa.

Only Legendary items will hold aspects, and if you add an aspect to an item of lower grade, it will become a Legendary. To imprint an aspect at the Occultist, you’ll need to spend money alongside a number of Veiled Crystals. It costs six Veiled Crystal to imprint an aspects from the Codex of Power, while aspects in your inventory cost less.

You can get Veiled Crystals in Diablo 4 by salvaging items of Rare or Legendary rarity. These don’t guarantee Veiled Crystals as a reward, but salvage enough and you’ll steadily build up a supply.

Because Veiled Crystals are a rare resource and extracting destroys items, you probably shouldn’t use aspects in Diablo 4 very often, especially not in the early game when you’ll likely be upgrading your equipment pretty regularly. Once you have some armor or weapons you’re likely to stick with some some time, consider imprinting them with the buff you’re after.

That’s all we can teach you about how to use aspects, but if you’re new to the series, we also have more Diablo 4 beginners tips to check out as well.
