PUBG Xbox One Controller Layout Revealed

Here’s how the controls work in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One.

With just a few hours until the release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One’s Game Preview, fans can get an early look at the controller scheme for PUBG on Xbox One thanks to a recent news post from Mike Nelson on Xbox Wire. In the post, several gamepad layout images were revealed detailing how PUBG’s various controls have been translated for the Xbox One controller. We've included a few of the main control layout images below.

Aside from basic movement and shooting, PUBG has a number of other gameplay mechanics that need their own control scheme, such as inventory management. “Translating these mechanics down to the Xbox One controller has been a challenge, but the team at PUBG Corp. — with support from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group and The Coalition, developers of the Gears of War franchise — believe they’ve found the right balance between giving players enough flexibility to survive in the hostile battleground and to effectively manage in-game equipment on the fly,” says Nelson.

Here's the basic control scheme for PUBG on Xbox One.

The developers had to get a bit creative with the PUBG Xbox One controller layout to account for the game’s various gameplay mechanics. For example, the basic gamepad layout for PUBG includes dual-purpose buttons that will perform different functions when pressed quickly or held down. “Holding X will allow you to reload your weapon; tapping X will allow you to interact with objects,” Nelson explains.

The directional pad is used for cycling between equipment items, such as grenades or healing kits. PUBG players on Xbox One can tap the D-pad to cycle to an item, then press and hold briefly to use the item without needing to open their inventory screen, saving crucial time during battle.

There’s also a separate Aim mode layout that allows players to hold their breath while sniping, as well as an option to switch between firing modes using the D-pad. In Aim mode, both LT and RT are required for throwing grenades.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has a ton of vehicles for players to make a quick getaway. Driving vehicles in PUBG on Xbox One should be pretty easy, considering the development team opted to stick with the control scheme found in popular multiplayer games with driving mechanics. Press X to enter a vehicle, and if you want to swap seats to use your weapon, simply hold the A button.

The swimming controls are also quite simple. Use the B button to dive down, and press A to float back up. You can’t use your weapon while swimming, but you can interact with loot you find underwater by pressing X. The map controls are straightforward as well, with buttons that allow for zooming and placing markers.

Having clear controls for inventory management is important when playing a game like PUBG.

Lastly, there’s the inventory, which will primarily involve using the bumpers (RB/LB) to swap through items and equipment. Press X to pick up items, and A to switch items with those in your current loadout. Players can also easily strip the attachments off a weapon by holding X, or by holding Y if the item is outside your inventory.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is coming to Xbox One on December 12 through the Xbox Game Preview program. Head over to the PUBG Xbox release schedule to find out exactly what time PUBG launches in your area.
