How to sidegrade weapons in Fortnite

In Fortnite, a question that’s commonly asked is how to sidegrade your weapons. As part of the Season 2 Week 3 challenges, it makes sense that people would want to know exactly how to sidegrade in Fortnite in order to complete this challenge as quickly as possible. To sidegrade a weapon, you’ll first need to locate an Upgrade Bench.
In Fortnite Season 2, Upgrade Benches can be found all throughout the map in large hub locations like Dirty Docks and Retail Row. To make things easier, we’ve included an image (seen above) of what an Upgrade Bench looks like so you know what to keep an eye out for as you explore various areas in Fortnite.
When you encounter an Upgrade Bench, you may have difficulty using it to sidegrade if you come unprepared. As of right now, the only weapon you can sidegrade at an Upgrade Bench is the Assault Rifle. If you don’t have an Assault Rifle, you can’t sidegrade. That said, you can upgrade any weapon type as long as you have enough materials and it’s not at the max rarity level.
When you have an Assault Rifle on hand, keep in mind that you’ll also need the following materials in order to sidegrade:
- 20 Wood
- 20 Brick
- 20 Metal
Once you collect those materials, it should be relatively simple to sidegrade your Assault Rifle at an Upgrade Bench. For a step-by-step, simply approach the Upgrade Bench, then view the options available to you. Either choose to upgrade your Assault Rifle to the next rarity level up (does not count towards challenge progress), or sidegrade your Assault Rifle.
When completing Season 2 Week 3 challenges, you’ll want to sidegrade a weapon in this manner three times in total. Given the low material cost and the sheer number of Upgrade Benches located around the Fortnite map, it shouldn’t be too difficult as long as you keep all of the specifics listed above in mind.
